June Hicks

Born in Yorkshire, June moved to Cornwall over forty years ago. She studied with Bouverie Hoyton and John Tunnard at the School of Art in Penzance and later learned to etch with Joan Whiteford.

“From day one I was fascinated by the process of etching. Something hard to define happens when a drawing is transferred to a plate and becomes a print: it is this elusive difference, which means that the excitement of lifting the press blankets and pulling the damp paper off the inked plate never stops. Subjects are everywhere: whatever has light and shade, texture and form invites translation into the hand-printed image.”

Her work is in private collections and galleries in Cornwall and beyond. She is a founding member of Penwith Printmakers, belongs to the Small Print Works Co-operative in Penzance and is a member of the St. Ives and Penzance Societies of Artists.
