John was born in Lincolnshire, 1936. He studied sculpture at Leicester College of Art and at Goldsmith College, London.

After working with David Leach for two years at Lowerdown Pottery in Devon, he started his own workshop in 1964, making domestic ware and individual pots. Since 1976 he has made only individual pieces, mainly in oxidised stoneware, often with enamel glazes. For a while, the work was about English landscapes, hand built, with coloured slip-glazes and was usually fired three times, but has naturally progressed into other areas.

He has lectured widely in England and abroad. His work is in many public collections and exhibitions include one-man shows in Japan and Germany. He is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and is recognised as one of Britain’s finest ceramic artists having won the Gold Medal at the Faenza International Ceramics Competition in 1975.

We have known John for over twenty years and are one of only a handful of galleries still selling his highly sought-after ceramic sculpture.
