David originates from Whitstable, Kent and trained as a teacher at Bishop Otter College, Chichester where he studied pottery as a main subject.
He started painting at evening classes whilst living in Corsham where he was a Headteacher. He also attended the St. Ives School of Painting on residential courses during this period and became captivated by the seaside town.
In 1986, David relocated to St. Ives and taught in Penzance where he had special responsibility for art in his school and ran in-service art courses for teachers in the area. He was also co-ordinator of the education working party for the St. Ives Tate Action Group before the Tate opened.
David retired from teaching in 1998. He now spends most of his time painting.
