Judy Hempstead

1939 - 2020

Judy received her training at Newton Abbot College of Art and then Goldsmith’s College London. After working as a senior lecturer in Art and Design at Exeter College she left to become a full-time practising artist.

Having spent her formative years living by the sea in South Devon it is perhaps not surprising that she drew inspiration from the ever-changing moods of the sea and the West Country coastline. Her expressive, mixed media paintings and assemblages, which swing between abstraction and a more literal approach, demonstrate her absorption with the way in which natural forces and processes shape, colour, oxidise, bleach and in particular texture both natural and man-made objects.

After several successful solo and group exhibitions, she now has work hanging in private collections around the world. Judy was also awarded a substantial grant by South West Arts to stage an innovative, multimedia exhibition at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton.
